Large Mammal Tracking near the Caño Palma Research Station, Costa Rica
The objectives of this project include:
• The creation of digital maps for the area around COTERC’s Caño Palma Biological Station, including the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge. These will be topographic maps so that researchers can use them as a reference. These do not exist within the Client’s organization and are considered a necessity for further research and for the tracking of animals that are being studied
in the area
• Ecosystem classification for the station and surrounding area. This is being done with the help of INBio as they are also interested in having this classification done.
• Database development will be done to the current database in use by the Caño Palma Biological Station. Currently the database is being used without any relationships being established between the separate tables of data. It will be cleaned up and organized to hopefully provide more functionality (being able to execute queries, create reports) to COTERC.
• The creation of a web‐based GIS that will be utilized by COTERC for the use in any research that takes place in the Refuge. This web‐based service will be created by SRB GIS and COTERC will have access to and the ability to allow any individual access to the site and all information contained within. This is further discussed in our constraints section.
• The suggestion of a new transect for researchers to create. This new transect will be located just outside of the Caño Palma station, between the Tortuguero National Park and the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge. This new transect will attempt to incorporate as many different ecosystems as possible so as to be a benefit to researchers.
